Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever a florística e estrutura da regeneração natural do estrato arbustivo-arbóreo em um fragmento florestal no sul do estado do Espírito Santo, bem como verificar a interação da vegetação com algumas variáveis ambientais selecionadas. Foi desenvolvido na Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural (RPPN) Cafundó, em doze subparcelas de 1 x 20 m, onde foram delimitadas três classes de tamanho - classe 1 (plantas entre 0,1 e 1 m de altura), classe 2 (1,1 e 3 m de altura) e classe 3 (altura maior que 3 m e menor que 5 cm DAP). A RPPN possui uma área de 517 ha, onde 358 ha foram utilizados para alocação das unidades experimentais. Os indivíduos foram classificados quanto ao grupo ecológico e síndrome de dispersão. Foi calculado o índice de diversidade, equabilidade, densidade e frequência das espécies e a similaridade de Sorensen entre o estrato regenerante e adulto. A interação do estrato regenerante com variáveis ambientais foi realizada através da Análise de Correspondência Canônica. Foram amostrados 678 indivíduos, distribuídos em 73 espécies/morfoespécies, sendo Actinostemon klotzschii e Goniorrhachis marginata as mais abundantes. A similaridade entre regeneração e estrato arbóreo foi 29%. O grupo ecológico e a dispersão predominante, respectivamente, foram secundária tardia e zoocoria. A diversidade de Shannon (H’) foi 3,13 e equabilidade de 0,72. As espécies Goniorrhachis marginata, Actinostemon klotzschii e Psychotria carthagenensis tiveram correlação com carbono (C), fósforo (P), declividade e cobertura de dossel. Concluiu-se que a regeneração natural na área estudada possui elevada riqueza e densidade de indivíduos quando comparado a estudos desenvolvidos na mesma fitofisionomia. As variáveis ambientais estudadas parecem ter pouca influência na distribuição das espécies da regeneração natural, uma vez que apenas o carbono, o fósforo, a declividade e a cobertura do dossel explicaram parte da distribuição das espécies no fragmento.

Abstract This paper aims to evaluate the floristic and structure of natural regeneration in a forest fragment located in the south of Espírito Santo State, as well as to verify the interaction between vegetation and environmental variables. The study was developed in Private Reserve of Nature Patrimony (RPPN) Cafundó, with twelve sample units (1 x 20m), where three classes based on size - Class 1 (plants between 0.1 and 1m high), Class 2 (plants between 1.1 and 3m high) and Class 3 (plants higher than 3m and less than 5cm DBH). This RPPN has a total area of 517ha, which approximately 358ha were used for allocation of experimental units. Individuals were classified according to ecological group and dispersion syndrome. Floristic diversity, equability, density and frequency of species were also calculated. Analysis of natural regeneration, floristic similarity between natural regeneration and the upper layer as well the regenerating layer interaction with environmental variables was performed through Canonical Correspondence Analysis. We found 678 individuals distributed in 73 morphospecies/species, with Actinostemon klotzschii and Goniorrhachis marginata being the most abundant. Sorensen's similarity between natural regeneration and the adult tree layer was 29%. The most dominant ecological groups were late secondary, while zoochory was the predominant dispersion syndrome among existing species. Shannon diversity index was 3.13 and equability 0.72. Goniorrhachis marginata, Actinostemon klotzschii and Psychotria carthagenensis species had correlation with carbon (C), phosphorus (P), declivity and canopy cover. We concluded that the natural regeneration component within studied area has a high richness and density of individuals when compared to studies developed in similar phytophysiognomies. The studied environmental variables seem to have little influence on the distribution of natural regeneration species in the RPPN, once only carbon, phosphorus, declivity and canopy cover have explained the species distribution within fragment.

Resumo A dinâmica da serapilheira é um dos processos fundamentais para o crescimento e manutenção dos fragmentos florestais nativos, sendo considerada a principal via de ciclagem de nutrientes nas florestas. Portanto, estudos sobre a serapilheira acumulada e conteúdo de nutrientes subsidiam informações para uma melhor compreensão da dinâmica dos nutrientes. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar o estoque de serapilheira e nutrientes em diferentes estações do ano e a taxa instantânea de decomposição em um fragmento de Floresta Atlântica ao longo de dois anos. A amostragem da serapilheira foi realizada em 12 parcelas permanentes com dimensões de 20 m x 50 m. Determinou-se a massa seca da serapilheira e o teor dos nutrientes. O acúmulo médio anual de serapilheira foi de 5.269 kg ha-1. Não houve diferença estatística na quantidade de serapilheira entre as estações do ano. Houve diferença estatística nos teores de N, P, K Ca e Mg entre as diferentes estações do ano. Os estoques de nutrientes foram de 123.3, 92.8, 13.2, 11.8, 9.6 e 3.0 kg ha-1 para Ca, N, Mg, S, K e P, respectivamente. O total de nutrientes na serapilheira acumulada foi de 253,7 kg ha-1 ano-1. O tempo de renovação da serapilheira foi de 281 dias. O tempo para a decomposição de 50% e 95% da mesma foi de 196 e 850 dias, respectivamente. A produção média de serapilheira, o estoque de nutrientes e a decomposição estão de acordo com outros estudos realizados, indicando que o fragmento de Floresta Atlântica sazonal semidecidual apresenta indicadores de ciclagem de nutrientes. Esses resultados encontrados mostram que o ecossistema se encontra sustentável sob ponto de vista da ciclagem e liberação dos nutrientes.

Abstract Litter dynamics is one of the fundamental processes for the growth and maintenance of native forest fragments, being considered the main pathway for nutrient cycling in forests. Therefore, studies on accumulated litter and nutrient content provide information for a better understanding of nutrient dynamics. The aim of the study was to evaluate leaf litter and nutrient stock in different seasons and the instantaneous rate of decomposition in an Atlantic Forest Fragment over two years. Litter sampling was carried out in 12 permanent plots with dimensions of 20 m x 50 m. Litter dry mass and nutrient concentration were determined. The average annual accumulation of litter was 5269 kg ha-1. There was no statistically significant difference in the amount of litter between seasons. There was a statistically significant difference in the contents of N, P, K Ca and Mg between the different seasons. Nutrient stocks were 123.3, 92.8, 13.2, 11.8, 9.6, 3.0 kg ha-1 year-1 for Ca, N, Mg, S, K and P respectively. The total of nutrients in the accumulated litter was 253.7 kg ha-1 year-1. The litter renewal time was 281 days. The times required for 50% and 95% litter decomposition were 196 and 850 days. The average litter stocks, nutrients and decomposition are in line with other studies, indicating that the Atlantic Forest fragment seasonal semi-deciduous presents indicators of nutrient cycling. These results show that the ecosystem is sustainable from the point of view of cycling and nutrient release.

Abstract The aim of the study was to investigate Pseudobombax aff. petropolitanum (PP) contribution on annual fine litterfall, carbon content, and nutrient concentration, compared to other woody species (OS) on a neotropical inselberg in Espírito Santo state, Brazil. Annual fine litterfall was systematic monthly collected (November 2011-October 2012) by means of 15 littertraps (0.25 m2) placed in five transects, oven-dried (65 °C, 72 h), weighed, and C content and nutrients concentration (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn) were estimated. PP performed lower litterfall, C content, and nutrient concentration excepting higher K concentration, compared to OS. The results suggested that PP performed higher nutrient conservation, which indicated its potential in restoring degraded areas observed in the inselberg.

Resumo As listas florísticas regionais são essenciais para definir estratégias de conservação da biodiversidade e importantes instrumentos para preencher lacunas de conhecimento. O objetivo foi fornecer uma base de dados a partir de uma listagem de espécies como ferramenta para conservação e manejo do ecossistema. Apresentamos aqui os resultados de um inventário de plantas vasculares em uma Floresta Ombrófila Densa no Parque Nacional Caparaó e abordamos suas implicações para a conservação e manejo desta área protegida e das comunidades do entorno. Realizamos expedições botânicas entre os anos de 2012 e 2017 na vertente capixaba dessa floresta ombrófila no parque. Foram encontradas 361 espécies distribuídas em 78 famílias e 181 gêneros. A área de estudo abriga novas espécies para ciência que foram recentemente descritas em outras publicações fora dessa localidade, e 4 novos registros para o Espírito Santo; também 43 espécies listadas em diferentes categorias de ameaça de extinção (VU, EN, CR) e outras 190 categorizadas com menores preocupações (LC e NT). As famílias com maior riqueza de espécies foram: Melastomataceae (41 spp.), Lauraceae e Myrtaceae (30), Orchidaceae (26), Rubiaceae (24) e Asteraceae (20). Nossos resultados contribuem para um maior conhecimento da flora do Parque, dos ambientes montanos no Brasil e da vegetação do Espírito Santo, além de demonstrar a importância dessa área protegida para a conservação da biodiversidade da Mata Atlântica.

Abstract Regional floristic lists are essential for defining biodiversity conservation strategies and are key to assist in filling knowledge gaps. They aim to provide a data source for applying tools to reduce extinction rates and to conserve ecosystems. Herein we present the results of an inventory of vascular plants in a rainforest in the Caparaó National Park (CNP) and approach their implications for conservation and management of this protected area and the surrounding communities. We conducted botanical expeditions between the years 2012 and 2017 in a montane and upper-montane forest of the CNP. We found 361 species distributed in 78 families and 181 genera. The study area is home to new species for science that have recently been described in other publications outside that location, and 4 new records for Espírito Santo State; also 43 species listed in different extinction threat categories (VU, EN and CR) and another 190 categorized with lesser concerns (LC and NT). The families with the highest species richness were: Melastomataceae (41 spp.), Lauraceae and Myrtaceae (30), Orchidaceae (26), Rubiaceae (24), and Asteraceae (20). Our results contribute to greater knowledge of the CNP flora, of the montane environments in Brazil and the vegetation of Espírito Santo state, in addition to demonstrate the importance of this protected area to the conservation Atlantic Forest biodiversity.

ABSTRACT We focus on understanding the influence of environmental variables on ecological processes, and such a focus promotes an integrated view of forest ecological patterns. The following questions were made: Do variations in temperature, precipitation, litterfall deposition and light intensity influence the density and composition of seed rain in a stretch of the Montane Atlantic Rainforest? Is there a pattern for dispersal syndrome in Montane Atlantic,? Over a period of 12 months, the deposition patterns of seed rains were evaluated. Seed density and species richness correlated with temperature and precipitation, with species richness decreasing with increasing altitude and seed density increasing as a function of the light incidence. Seed rain followed a seasonal deposition pattern with higher seed density and species richness in the higher rainfall period. Increasing trend in seed density was found in mountainous areas with northern and northeastern aspects (higher light incidences).

ABSTRACT In this study, vegetation reproduction has been investigated in order to understand aspects of speciation, structuring and composition of plant communities. Thus, we sought to characterize the frequency of sexual systems from species recorded in seed rain occurring in a tropical rainforest (Atlantic Forest) in Caparaó National Park, Espírito Santo State, Brazil. We collected the seed rain for twelve months, classified and recorded the species for: sexual system; pollination and dispersion syndrome; and fruit type. Then we measured the correlation between these attributes through correspondence analysis. Regarding sexual systems, 71% were hermaphrodites, 13% dioecious, and 11% monoecious. Hermaphrodites are best associated with pollination, dispersion and fruit types, represented by 65% of data variance. This study may contribute to elaborating management and conservation programs taking into account the interaction of plants with the local fauna.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to identify, characterize and map an area for its different types of direct and indirect use of native vegetation of sandy coastal plains (Restinga) at “Praia das Neves”, a district of the municipality of Presidente Kennedy, state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. Data were collected on site using an orthophotomosaic provided by the State Environmental Institute (IEMA) on a 1:35,000 scale, where plant formations of sandy coastal plains were identified and mapped. Six phytophysiognomies were categorized by the following surveying: Halophyte/Creeping-Psamophyte, Open Scrub Palm, Low Closed Thicket, Open Scrub, Non-Flooded Forest and Herbaceous Swamp. Vegetation portions were fragmented due to use for real estate dynamics and cattle raising activity. Among the most prominent and supplied goods are wood exploitation, vegetable products for food and fresh water supply. Furthermore, the services identified are water resource maintenance and ecological functions provided by sandy coastal plain phytophysiognomies.

Resumo Estudos sobre a estrutura vegetacional de fragmentos florestais que consideram o uso pretérito do solo podem contribuir para subsidiar ações conservacionistas e de restauração florestal. A partir disso, objetivamos comparar três sítios de um fragmento florestal com distintas histórias de perturbação e verificar se os mesmos diferem entre si com relação ao estágio sucessional analisando atributos estruturais da vegetação arbórea e abundância de lianas. A área estudada localiza-se no município de Alegre-ES, em uma Floresta Estacional Semidecidual constituída por três sítios com diferentes históricos de uso do solo e idades de pousio que recuperaram-se de corte seletivo (CS), lavoura de café (CC) e pastagem (PA). Utilizamos parcelas (19) de área fixa (20 × 20 m) na amostragem, totalizando 0,76 ha. Os indivíduos arbóreos com DAP ≥ 5 cm e as lianas com DAP ≥ 1 cm foram amostrados. A análise da categoria sucessional demonstrou que os sítios CS e PA possuem estágio mais avançado de sucessão em relação à CC. A espécie de maior VI, síndromes de dispersão e lianas apontaram maior avanço sucessional do sítio PA, área com maior proteção aos efeitos de borda e antrópicos por estar localizada no interior do fragmento florestal. As demais análises não demonstraram diferença entre os três sítios.

Abstract To consider past land use on vegetative structure studies of forest fragments can contribute to conservation and forest restoration actions. From this we aim to compare three sites of a forest fragment with distinct anthropogenic disturbances and to verify if they differ on successional stage through analyses of structural traits (trees) and non-trees abundance (lianas) The studied area is located in the Alegre municipality, ES state, in a semideciduous seasonal forest matrix with different land use history composed of selective cutting (CS), coffee crop (CC) and pasture (PA). At each site, randomly plots were sample (19 total plots, 20 × 20 m each), totaling 0.76 ha. All tree individuals with DBH ≥ 5 cm and liana with DBH ≥ 1 cm were sampled. The successional category showed an advanced stage of succession in the CS and PA sites. The specie with higher VI, the dispersion syndromes and the abundance of lianas showed successional advanced stage only in the PA site, because is located inside the forest fragment providing greater protection from edge effects, and anthropogenic disturbances. The others analyses didn´t showed statistical differences between the three sites.

Resumo Inventários florísticos realizados ao sul do estado do Espírito Santo nos últimos anos têm auxiliado a preencher lacunas de coleta de plantas especialmente em áreas de difícil acesso, como a região do Caparaó. Estes estudos resultaram na descoberta de sete espécies de Angiospermas, de ocorrência previamente desconhecida para o estado, coletadas nas Serras do Caparaó e do Valentim. Os materiais coletados foram depositados no herbário VIES. A distribuição geográfica global foi mapeada por meio dos dados obtidos nos sítios Herbário Virtual Reflora e Flora do Brasil 2020. Os sete novos registros aqui reportados para o Espírito Santo pertencem a sete famílias diferentes de Angiospermas: Annonaceae (Guatteria pohliana), Apocynaceae (Peplonia adnata), Asteraceae (Mikania clematidifolia), Cunoniaceae (Weinmannia pinnata), Melastomataceae (Leandra quinquedentata e Pleroma foveolatum) e Ochnaceae (Ouratea campos-portoi). São fornecidos diagnoses das espécies, mapas com a distribuição global atualizada e comentários sobre os ambientes de ocorrência das espécies estudadas. Além de prover informações atualizadas ao Projeto Flora do Espírito Santo, esses dados poderão ser utilizados pelos taxonomistas para atualização do sítio Flora do Brasil 2020. Isto será especialmente útil para aquelas famílias que ainda não estão sendo monografadas na Flora do Espírito Santo.

Abstract Floristic inventories carried out in the south of the Espírito Santo state in recent years have helped to fill gaps in plant collection, especially in difficult access areas such as the Caparaó region. These studies resulted in the discovery of seven species of Angiosperms previously unknown to the state, collected in the Caparaó and Valentim highlands. The voucher specimens are housed at VIES herbarium. The global geographic distribution was obtained from the Herbário Virtual Reflora and Flora do Brasil 2020 sites. The seven new records reported for the Espírito Santo belongs to seven different families of Angiosperms: Annonaceae (Guatteria pohliana), Apocynaceae (Peplonia adnata), Asteraceae (Mikania clematidifolia), Cunoniaceae (Weinmannia pinnata), Melastomataceae (Leandra quinquedentata e Pleroma foveolatum) e Ochnaceae (Ouratea campos-portoi). Diagnoses based on species morphology, maps with updated global distribution and comments about the environment of the studied species are provided. In addition to providing up-to-date information to the Flora of Espírito Santo Project, this data can be used by taxonomists to update the Flora do Brasil 2020 site. This will be especially useful for those families who are not yet being monographed in the Flora of Espírito Santo.

RESUMO O presente estudo teve por objetivo descrever florística e estruturalmente o estrato lenhoso de uma comunidade arbustiva fechada sobre cordão arenoso na Restinga da Marambaia. Para isso, utilizou-se metodologia de intercepto de linha, em que em 1170 m de amostragem foram inventariados 1938 indivíduos lenhosos ≥0,50 m de altura, distribuída em 73 espécies e 30 famílias. Famílias com maiores VI foram Myrtaceae (21%), Nyctaginaceae (7%), Malvaceae (7%). Myrtaceae teve maior riqueza (15sp.) e número de indivíduos (379). Espécies com maior VI foram Guapira opposita, Maytenus obtusifolia, Pavonia alnifolia, Aspidosperma parvifolium, Eugenia copacabanensis, Myrrhinium atropurpureum, Manilkara subsericea, Ouratea cuspidata, Erythroxylum ovalifolium. A diversidade foi H’=3,49 e equidade, J=0,81. A similaridade com mesmo tipo de vegetação em Marica - RJ foi CS=0,37 e CN=0,15. Constatou-se similaridade relativamente alta (CS=0,62) entre esta e uma floresta de duna na Marambaia, indicando forte ligação florística entre elas. A comunidade analisada foi classificada como arbustiva fechada de Myrtaceae por atender a critérios florísticos, fisionômicos e estruturais. Embora existam semelhanças em relação à riqueza e VI de espécies de Myrtaceae entre Marambaia e Maricá, a similaridade entre ambas formações é baixa, em termos qualitativos e quantitativos, demonstrando uma heterogeneidade ao longo do litoral. Isto dificulta a ampla utilização da classificação nomenclatural das comunidades de restinga.

ABSTRACT The present study described the floristic and structure of the woody layer in closed shrubby formation on a sandy coastal plain at Restinga da Marambaia and compare this vegetation to other physiognomically similar plant communities. Using the line intercept method, a total of 1170m were sampled, resulting in 1938 woody plants (dbh ≥ 0.5cm), 73 species, 30 families. The families with highest importance values were Myrtaceae (21%), Nyctaginaceae (7.2%), Malvaceae (7.1%). Myrtaceae had the most species (15) and also the greatest number of individuals (379). The species with the greatest importance values were Guapiraopposita, Maytenusobtusifolia, Pavoniaalnifolia, Aspidospermaparvifolium, Eugenia copacabanensis, Myrrhiniumatropurpureum, Manilkarasubsericea, Ouratea cuspidate, Erythroxylumovalifolium. Diversity index H´= 3.49, J´= 0.81. Similarity between this community and formation in Maricá (CS = 0.37, CN= 0.15). This closed shrubby formation was classifiedas Myrtaceae thicket basedon floristic, physiognomic, structural parameters. Although this community and that of Maricá are similar in terms of physiognomy and Myrtaceae species richness and importance, the similarity value is low, both quantitatively and qualitatively terms, revealing a great degree of heterogeneity between plant communities along the coast. This has created a certain amount of difficulty in placing plant communities within existing classification systems.

Resumo Este estudo avaliou a riqueza de epífitas vasculares sobre Pseudobombax sp. nov. em três inselbergs do Domínio Atlântico no estado do Espírito Santo e avaliou a similaridade florística entre as áreas. Foram amostrados 111 forófitos, em três regiões no sul do estado do Espírito Santo e identificados 151 espécies, 77 gêneros e 21 famílias de epífitos vasculares, das quais as famílias Orchidaceae e Bromeliaceae apresentaram maior riqueza. Estimadores não-paramétricos (Chao 2, Jackknife 1) indicam que 90 e 95% da riqueza específica de epífitas foi registrada. A categoria ecológica mais diversificada foi a dos holoepífitos característicos. A razão entre o número de epífitas e número de forófitos amostrados em um inselberg montano, neste estudo, foi maior do que a riqueza de epífitos encontrados nos campos rupestres, e, em geral, em diferentes tipos de florestas do Domínio Atlântico, mas menor em riqueza para algumas Florestas Ombrófilas Densas do sul do Brasil. As três áreas de inselbergs tinham floras distintas. A elevada riqueza, o endemismo encontrado e o número de espécies ameaçadas dos epífitos evidenciam a importante função de Pseudobombax sp. nov., por sua arquitetura e tamanho, para a manutenção da biodiversidade em inselbergs do sudeste brasileiro.

Abstract This study evaluated the richness of vascular epiphytes on Pseudobombax sp. nov. in three inselbergs in the Atlantic Forest Domain in state of Espírito Santo and evaluated the floristic similarity between the areas. We sampled 111 phorophytes in three regions in the southern of Espírito Santo state and identified 151 species, 77 genera and 21 families of vascular epiphytes, of which the families Orchidaceae and Bromeliaceae showed the highest richness. Non-parametric estimators (Chao 2, Jackknife 1) indicate that 90 and 95% of species richness of epiphytes was recorded. The most diversified ecological category was the characteristic holoepiphytes. The ratio of the number of epiphytes and number of phorophytes sampled in a montane inselberg, in this study, was greater than the richness of vascular epiphytes found in the rocky outcrops of quartzite, and, in general, different types of Atlantic Domain forests, but smaller in richness for some Dense Ombrophilous Forests of southern Brazil. The three inselberg areas had distinct floras. The high richness, the endemism found, and the number of endangered species of epiphytes demonstrate the important role of Pseudobombax sp. nov., because of its architecture and size, in the maintenance of biodiversity on the inselbergs in southeastern Brazil.

Em Caravelas, município localizado no sul do estado da Bahia, as principais formações vegetais são as florestas de mangue e as restingas apresentando, estas últimas, alto grau de degradação. O objetivo deste artigo consiste em descrever as principais espécies florestais de restingas e seus usos diretos associados, com vistas à recuperação e ao manejo de áreas degradadas e à geração de trabalho e renda, compondo, dessa forma, importante ferramenta para a gestão integrada da zona costeira. Para isso, a elaboração de listagens florísticas e visitas ao campo foram necessárias para reconhecimento do ambiente. Na seleção das espécies, uma literatura referente ao uso, manejo e valor agregado de cada uma das espécies identificadas foi utilizada e, a partir daí, foram reconhecidas quatro espécies com potencialidade para geração de trabalho e renda nos moldes dessa proposta: mangaba (Hancornia speciosa),pitanga (Eugenia uniflora),caju (Anacardium occidentale) e aroeira (Schinus terebinthifolius). As três primeiras apresentam associação de seus frutos ao uso alimentar, servindo a aroeira como condimentação, com alta valorização no mercado mundial, e o caju, a partir da sua estrutura fértil (castanha e polpa). A identificação dos subprodutos vegetais fornecidos assegura a utilização sustentada das espécies e do ambiente e os Produtos Florestais Não Madeiráveis podem ser estratégicos no gerenciamento costeiro, tornando-se instrumento para se alcançar inclusão social através da geração de trabalho e renda, sob o movimento da Tecnologia Social, contribuindo, portanto, para a redução da vulnerabilidade social de comunidades costeiras tradicionais.

In Caravelas, located in southern Bahia state, the main vegetation formations are the mangrove forests and 'restingas' (sandbanks) presenting, the latter, a high degree of degradation. The aim of this paper is to describe the main forest species of these 'restingas' and their direct uses associated with the recovery and management of degraded areas and creation of jobs and income, making thus an important tool for integrated coastal zone. For this, elaborate floral listings and field visits were necessary for recognizing the environment. In the selection of species, a literature about the use, management and value of each species were used, and from there, four species with potential for generating jobs and income along of this proposal were recognized: Mangaba (Hancornia speciosa), Pitanga (Eugenia uniflora), Mangaba (Anacardium occidentale) and Aroeira (Schinus terebinthifolius). The first three are associated with the use of its fruit food, serving these 'aroeiras' as pepper trees, with a high value on the world market, and cashew, because of its fertile structure. The identification of products provided sustainable use of species and environment and the Non-Timber Forest Products can be strategic in coastal management, making it an instrument to subsidize social inclusion through the creation of jobs and income, under the movement of Social Technology, contributing to reduce the social vulnerability of traditional coastal communities.

Foram avaliadas as condições para prevenção e combate dos incêndios nas Unidades de Conservação (UCs) Estaduais do Espírito Santo. Foram realizadas entrevistas com os gestores das 16 UCs e visitas às mesmas, para análise de documentos, relatórios e planos de manejo. Os incêndios foram caracterizados segundo os grupos de causas e ordenados pelas classes de tamanho: I (0-0,009 ha), II (0,1-4,0 ha), III (4,1-40,0 ha), IV (40,1-200,0 ha) e V (>200 ha). Os menores déficits de pessoal e equipamentos operacionais foram apresentados pelas Unidades de Uso Sustentável. No entanto, a efetividade de gestão das Unidades de Proteção Integral é maior, com uma infraestrutura e pessoal permanente atuando nas mesmas. A maior causa dos incêndios foi representada pela queima para limpeza (20%), sendo classificados como tamanhos II e III (25%). Apesar das limitações de pessoal e equipamentos operacionais, as UCs Estaduais possuem condições mínimas para ações de prevenção e combate dos incêndios.

In this study, we evaluated the conditions for preventing and fighting forest fires in the Conservation Units (CU) of Espirito Santo state, Brazil. We visited the 16 existing CUs in the state. During these visits, we analyzed documents, reports and management plans and conducted interviews with the managers. The fires were characterized by main groups of causes and arranged according to size class: I (0-0.009 ha), II (0.1-4.0 ha), III (4.1-40.0 ha), IV (40.1-200.0 ha), and V (>200 ha). The Sustainable Use Units showed the lowest deficits of personnel and operating equipment; however, the management effectiveness of the Integral Protection Units is greater, presenting good infrastructure and permanent action of personnel. The major cause of fire was debris burning (20%) and the most common size classes were II and III (25%). Despite the limitations in personnel and operational equipment, the CUs hold the minimum conditions required for actions of prevention and combat to forest fires.

Buscou-se interpretar o conhecimento tradicional de uma comunidade quilombola acerca do uso de espécies vegetais com fins terapêuticos. Adotaram-se entrevistas semiestruturadas e análise de discurso para sua interpretação. Identificaram-se no herbário 57 espécies com fins medicinais. Conclui-se que o conhecimento é imprescindível para manutenção sociocultural dessa comunidade vulnerável e como forma de geração de trabalho e renda à luz do desenvolvimento sustentável local.

We interpreted the traditional knowledge of a Quilombola group about the use of plant species for therapeutic purposes (medicinal). Were adopted semi-structured interviews and discourse analysis to its interpretation. We identified 57 species in the herbarium for medicinal purposes. It is concluded that knowledge is essential for maintenance of socio-cultural vulnerable community and as a way of generating jobs and income the light of local sustainable development

Tratamos de interpretar los conocimientos tradicionales de una comunidad Quilombola sobre el uso de especies de plantas con fines terapéuticos. Se adoptaron entrevistas semiestruturadas y análisis del discurso para su interpretación. Se identificaron 57 especies en el herbario con fines medicinales. Se concluye que el conocimiento es esencial para el mantenimiento de las comunidades vulnerables socio-cultural y como una forma de generar empleos e ingresos a la luz del desarrollo sostenible local.

Nous avons essayé d'interpréter les connaissances traditionnelles d'une communauté Quilombola sur l'utilisation d'espèces végétales à des fins thérapeutiques. Ont été adoptées entretiens semi-structurés et de l'analyse du discours à son interprétation. Nous avons identifié 57 espèces de l'herbier à des fins médicinales. Il est conclu que la connaissance est essentielle pour le maintien de communautés vulnérables socioculturelles et comme un moyen de générer des emplois et des revenus de la lumière du développement durable local.

ABSTRACT This research presents the state-of-the-art related to the management of conservation units in the State of Espirito Santo, characterizing the conditions for management and infrastructure. The analysis carried out at the units, which were created in 2009, counted on the participation of all sixteen units’ managers, considering factors inherent to the prevention and combat actions impacting the units. Results indicated that ‘Duas Bocas REBIO’ holds the best conditions for management and infrastructure (82%) and ‘RDS Concha D’ostras’, the worst (5%). ‘PARE Itaúnas’ showed the greatest deficit of staff. Regarding the availability of operational equipment, it was possible to observe that 75% of the fully protected units are operationally deficient. As for tools to combat forest fires, ‘PARE Cachoeira da Fumaça’ presented the largest deficit, with no individual protection equipment (IPE). Inadequate infrastructure (14%) and hunting (12%) are the main threats to the units. These results will subsidize the planning and management of protected areas in the State of Espirito Santo.

RESUMO Esta pesquisa apresentou o estado da arte relacionado ao manejo das unidades de conservação estaduais do Espírito Santo, caracterizando as condições para gestão e infraestrutura. A análise contou com a participação dos gestores das 16 unidades, criadas até 2009, considerando-se os fatores inerentes às ações para prevenir e combater as ações impactantes nas unidades. Os resultados indicaram que a REBIO Duas Bocas possui melhores condições para gestão e infraestrutura (82%) e a RDS Concha D’Ostra, as piores (5%). O PARE Itaúnas apresentou maior déficit de pessoal. Na disponibilidade de equipamentos operacionais, observou-se que 75% das unidades de proteção integral estão com déficit operacional. Em relação às ferramentas de combate aos incêndios florestais, o PARE Cachoeira da Fumaça apresentou o maior déficit, onde não há equipamentos de proteção individual. A infraestrutura inadequada (14%) e a caça (12%) são as principais ameaças às unidades. Esses resultados subsidiarão planejamento e gestão das áreas protegidas do Espírito Santo.
